Yash Chopra’s Waqt (1965) may have laid the foundation for the lost-and-found theme in Hindi movies but Manmohan Desai’s Amar Akbar Anthony (AAA) etched it in history. One of the most popular Hindi films, AAA is a melange of one classic scene after another – like the mirror scene with Amitabh Bachchan, who won the Filmfare Best Actor Award, or the fight between Vinod Khanna and Amitabh. The story deals with three brothers who are lost as kids and are brought up by families of different religions. They meet again but not before some great drama that makes for great entertainment. Manmohan Desai was at his creative best while making AAA. Why else would he send cinematographer Peter Pereira down a well with the camera for one of the scene? No wonder action scenes and car chase sequences in AAA
are the best we’ve ever seen.
