Diablo 4 mount, how to unlock, customize, and more

How do you unlock the Diablo 4 mount? Everyone needs a trusty steed to ride through hell with and Diablo 4 mounts are your best bet for getting around the dangerous and vast world of Sanctuary. And thankfully, we’re here with everything you need to know about the mount system in Diablo 4, including how to unlock mounts, how mounts work with Seasonal Characters, and even mount customization. Diablo 4’s horses really are an amazing addition.

You’ll make great use of your mount in Diablo 4 once you’ve unlocked it, as the Diablo 4 map of Sanctuary is surprisingly sprawling. They’ll come in especially handy when finding collectibles like the Diablo 4 Altar of Lilith locations, or for quickly reaching the Diablo 4 Helltide areas in time. With the increased mobility, you might also find yourself using your mount as a quick getaway in the Diablo 4 Fields of Hatred PvP zone. Plus, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to Diablo 4 mounts. Here’s how to get a mount, and how to customize them.

How to unlock a mount in Diablo 4

To get a mount in Diablo 4, you need to complete the Mount: Donan’s Favor quest in Act 4, where you will gain access to the stables and mount system, and can get your first Diablo 4 mount after speaking to Oskar in Kyovashad.

To unlock the Mount: Donan’s Favor quest, you will first need to complete the Master’s Touch quest unlocked at the beginning of Act 4. We recommend completing this quest and unlocking the mount system as soon as possible as it’s excellent for exploring the map and traversing between activities efficiently. While it’s convenient during the campaign, it’s near vital during endgame since many activities have spawn timers and durations you’ve got to work around.

This will introduce you to Donan, the Stable Master in Kyovashad, where he will walk you through the mount system. Check out our Diablo 4 Acts guide to find out how close you are to reaching Act 4.

Once you’ve completed the Master’s Touch quest, return to Donan and the stable to receive and complete Diablo 4 Donan’s Favor and receive your first horse in Diablo 4.

You’ll get that first mount for free, but to get additional new mounts, you’ll have to grind to earn them as rewards, or fork out 20,000 Gold at the Stable Master. You can also earn or buy customization options to personalize your trusty steed, which you can find out more about further down in this guide.

Perhaps most importantly though, Blizzard has confirmed that, once you’ve unlocked the Diablo 4 mount system for the first time, it will be unlocked for all subsequent characters. Notably, this is key for Seasons, in which you’ll make a new Seasonal Character in each Season. Thankfully, as long as you’ve already unlocked the mount system before, you’ll start each Season and every character with a mount immediately upon spawning in. This will prove very handy in efficiently leveling your characters as you’ll need to grind from level 1 back to level 100, requiring lots of activity completions that will send you across the map. So, make sure you thank your horse from time to time for all their hard work in hauling you across Sanctuary, let alone through hordes of monsters.

How to use the mount in Diablo 4

To use your mount in Diablo 4, summon it by pressing right on your controller’s D-pad or Z on PC. Once mounted, you can sprint, though this has a limited charge, and you can perform leaping dismount attacks.

It’s worth noting that mounts can only be used in the overworld, not in dungeons or other instanced locations. While it would undoubtedly be convenient to speed through dungeons on horseback, it wouldn’t be great for balance.

While traversal will be the main use of mounts in Diablo 4, you can also performing dismounting attacks that are capable of great AoE damage. So, when you are up against a large crowd of monsters, you can dive headlong into the fight by leaping off your mount.

Diablo 4 mount customization

As you can see from our screenshot above, Diablo 4’s mount customization menu lets you swap between your owned mounts, or give them a new look with the addition of Mount Armors and Trophies so that you can gallop around in style.

Mount Armor changes the overall look of your mount, giving it different reins, saddle, and often an overcoat or headguard. As for the Mount Trophies, these are trinkets or treasures that can be strapped to your horse and can be displayed as feats of achievement. Some can also be bought from the in-game store, some can be earned as promotional rewards, and other as a reward for specific challenges.

For example, players could earn the Cry of Ashava Mount Trophy from defeating Ashava during the Server Slam weekend. Or, as a bonus in-game reward for buying certain Diablo 4-themed peripherals from SteelSeries, you could get the Bound Faith Trophy, which looks pretty awesome.

In fact, the Diablo 4 world bosses also have unique mount customization options. For example, Ashava can drop the Ashava Barding armor, while Avarice can drop the Teasure Beast Barding mount armor. Even the rare Diablo 4 Butcher boss has a chance to drop the Butcher’s Cleaver unique mount trophy customization.

Remember though, all customization options are purely cosmetic – they won’t improve your horse, gameplay-wise, in any way.

What is the best Diablo 4 mount?

Since all Diablo 4 mounts have the same stats, with the only differences being their appearance, there isn’t one mount that stands above the rest. No doubt that hasn’t stopped players from picking their favorites and making the case for them being the best mount, like the rare Spectral Charger. So, we suggest you simply pick whichever mount looks the best to you, as they all behave in exactly the same way.

And that’s all there is to know about Diablo 4 mounts, including how to get a mount in Diablo 4, and the customization options available to you. Once you’ve got a mount and bonded with your new best friend, start working towards the best Diablo 4 build for your chosen class.
